why does auto focus area change from original setting when different shooting modes are used?

have camera set for center focus in auto mode; change shooting mode to lets say 'P' mode and then go back to 'auto' mode. now auto focus area has changed to something else (ie dynamic area ). WHY???

Pete,

Generally, dSLR's maintain the settings for each shooting mode. If you change the settings for one, it won't necessarily change it for the other. I've had to do this with my dSLR for certain settings.

Thanks Andrew for your reply. I understand that the auto focus area has to be set for each shooting mode of the D50. Lets say that I set the "S" (shutter priority ) mode to auto focus in the center; then I change shooting modes to let's say "A" (aperature priority) and set it to auto focus on the right side; now I go back to shoot in "S" mode again, and the auto focus area is now set to Dynamic area or something else; not center area as previously set. This has happened on many ocassions.I thought about resetting the camera to factory defaults to see if the problem has anything to do with my custom settings; but I thought I'd ask for help first.I also haven't looked to see if this problem happens in all shooting modes; I was just trying to fix it in one mode first.

Pete,

That does sound a little odd. I don't think it has anything to do with your custom settings. Your camera's internal clock doesn't reset each time you power it off does it? If so, it may be a dying internal battery (like on a computer).

Hi Andrew; thanks for the thought; it definetly wouldn't hurt to replace the battery since I've got the camera 2yrs + already; the date & time stamp are ok. I'm going to check the auto focus settings in all shooting modes and see if they all change or what. Pete
