Chances are, they're still there. What I would do is get those pictures off the camera immediately by using a USB memory card reader. Your PC will read the card as a drive and it's a simple drag and drop. Then, I'd either reformat the card or use a file recovery utility like F-Recovery to fix your card. If you can't get all your pictures off, then use the utility to recover them.
