Will the LZ3 take good panoramic/scenic shots?

Our daughter is a budding photographer (11th grade) and likes taking close up shots. She needs a good zoom capability but also a camera that takes good, sharp scenic shots. She would like an SLR but we think a littlel more knowledge before such a purchase would be in order. So, a camera with excellent zoom, good panoramic ability and some manual controls to begin learning about some of the finer points in taking pictures. Also, she often photographs children and needs a reasonably short lag time between shots so as not to miss a twirl, smile or tumble.

This is a great camera but if your daughter is serious about digital photography she would really benefit from a dSLR camera. The LZ3 is really a point and shoot camera that is for casual picture takers. And when it comes down to it your daughter is going to need more power and control. In the long run, assuming it is in your price range, I would suggest an entry level SLR. This way she can really explore photography and learn how to use a camera that is atleast modeled after a super expensive pro style camera. Plus as she grows the camera can grow with her with the addition of advanced lens, including a nice macro lens for the close up shots she enjoys taking. I feel a true SLR is a very wise investment. Anything less she will grow out of in a few weeks, seriously.

The Nikon d50 is the camera that I would recommend. It is affordable for the style and it has all the features you need. Plus it is very highly reviewed. Very popular camera, a real work horse.

Good Luck,
Hope I helped.
