I have Nikon AF Nikkor lenses that are about 14 years old. Will they work with the D50 or D40?

I cannot find any model numbers on the lenses.

Hi Shari,

Most of Nikon's digital SLRs are fully compatible with all Nikon F-mount autofocus lenses. In addition, many non-autofocus lenses can be used with manual metering. There's a comprehensive chart here that'll fill you in on exactly which lenses will work with which bodies. The D40, however, has been crippled so that it will not work with non AF-S/AF-I lenses. This page suggests that earlier lenses will work in full manual mode, however. Still, if your Nikon lenses aren't AF-S or AF-I, you might want to look more at the D50 and older models of Nikon dSLR.

Good luck!

I've read your comprehensive table but I'm not clear as to whether I can use my two F90 lenses, the AF Nikkor 25-85mm and the Micro-Nikkor 55mm on a Nikon D40 body. I don't think I would mind having to focus manually if that is required.
Many thanks
Brian Wilkins

It is possible to use all nikon lenses on the D40(even pre AI lenses). The only problem is that the D40 can only autofocus with nikon af-s lenses or sigma HSM lenses. All other lenses will work fine, but can't use the autofocus function.
