How can I view images that are in RAW format?

I took some pics in RAW format, for some reason they will not open. When I try to open in Photoshop, it says it is the wrong kind of document.

If you already have adobe photoshop, you can download the updates from adobe.com that will allow you to open these files. If you are not sure what RAW is exactly, I would recommend setting your camera to take pics in JPEG or preferably TIFF. JPEG is compressed and TIFF is not. RAW is an undeveloped file. Which means that the white balance, exposure, and so on has not been set in stone yet. For more information on RAW format, I recommend going to this site: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/essays/rawtruth1.shtml
