D-70 with SB-600 not working together

I'm having a little trouble with my SB-600. I've searched and read and search some more. When I take a shot with the camera, the flash does indeed go off but the resulting picture is always to dark. I've tried it with several different autofocus lenses. The 50mm 1:1.4 D, the 85mm 1:1.8 D and one zoom lens, also an AF Nikkor. Is it the lenses? I guess I understand the zoom lens, to a certain extent but the fixed focal length lenses should work with this combination, or am I missing something? I am shooting in auto mode on the camera, TTL for the flash. ISO 400 and 200, ive tried both. The only way I seem to get sufficient light with the flash is to manually increase the flash output level, 3 to 4 levels up. And that worked just on close proximity tests that I did, within 10 feet of the subject.

I did look at the info on KenRockwell before I posted this question and I did not see an answer to my problem. Although reading it, I recognized that the flash and the camera should work together just fine. I really still do not know why they do not.
