Hello Greg , We all wish there was such a lens. But as Your first SLR camera a good choice would be the nikon AF-S DX 18-135 mm lens. It is a fast and quiet lens. you will have the opportunity of closeup photos as well as zoom and any where in between . This lens will be a good indoor as well as outdoor lens choice. Like the rest of us you will always find another lens you must have . But this Is a good choice as a first lens. This lens is about 300.00 list. If you are buying this camera new see if it is available with the lens and at what price. sometimes they will give you a break when you buy them as a set.

Thanks for the prompt response! I found a wedsite that is selling the D80 alone without the lens and flash for $387. This sounds unreal, or is it? I'm going to contact them tomorrow for more info...Is it worth taking this route and then supplementing the missing parts from somewhere else? Their package deal is around $1000, which comes with extra "freebees," like tripod and cleaing kit. AsI said before, this is my first, and I want to make the right choice.

Thank you in advance .

HI Greg , I went to mysimon.com and found camera and lens for $ 849.00-$ 1099. I would find out more info. on this dealer,or any dealer that the price seems too low just to be sure. Lenses are going to be the biggest expense with any camera. I like the web site dpreview.com they review lots of cameras. I personally bought the pentax k10d, which on this web site the nikon D80 is one of the cameras used as a comparable in the review. The price was more in my range , plus I had older lenses that will work on this camera.
