what does F-- mean

F-- is flashing on the screan

According to the manual, if you use a lens that is "Non-CPU" then that'll pop up and you can select manual mode "M" and shoot. However, it can also pop up if the lens contacts are dirty. Take a pencil eraser and rub the contacts on both the lens and the body, and then us canned air to blow out the fluff.
