Where are the Nikon D90 cameras made?

We live in Canada, however, we are a 10 minute drive to the US border. The Nikon D90 is listed as $150 cheaper if we get it in the US instead of in Canada, however, depending on where the camera is made will determine the duty we have to pay at the border. So I'm trying to find out where exactly the camera is made....in the US???

I'm pretty sure the parts are made in Japan, then the cameras are assembled in either the US or Mexico.

Mexico I may believe, but the US? I'm skeptical. Most manufacturing of cameras and electronics left the US a few decades ago. My bet is Japan or Taiwan.

Well manufacturing and assembly are two different things... The manufacturing is most likely done in Japan, but the assembly is almost always done close to where its sold to help stop damage to finished products, and to help save on shipping costs. Usually this has been Mexico in the past, but is now starting to come to the US.

Just a bit confused because there is different answer in Yahoo saying :

" Best Answer - Chosen by Asker
Nikon does not have a camera assembly plant in the USA. The Sendai, Japan Nikon plant manufactures the D1, D2, D3 and D100. The Thailand Nikon plant makes or made all other Nikon DSLR's such as the D40, D50, D70, S70s, D40x, D60, D80, D200, and D300. "

see Thailand Nikon Plant

There was rumor that Nikon had a plant in the US, because some of their products were branded as such, but I guess this was really just a rumor. So, it looks like the cameras are assembled in Thailand, or Sendai, Japan mainly, as well as some other countries; thanks for finding that bukit.

When I spoke to someone from Circuit City on the phone, they said that on the box, it says "made in Japan". THe reason for me asking this question was to find out how much duty I would have to pay at the border, however, after talking to the Canadian border, apparently digital cameras are one of those things that are exempt for us having to pay duty at the border on them. Crazy! Thanks for all of your help!

Well glad you got everything figured out; I guess even though the answer didn't come of us to you, and that it took us a little while to arrive at the correct one, someone else may find it useful. Plus its a good piece of trivial knowledge, I guess.

ALL of D90s are MADE IN THAILAND.
Because of labour costs, most of Nikon DSLR cameras and lenses are Made in Thailand through OEM
(original equipment manufacturer) with the exception of D700, D3, D3X, D2X and some of the high-end lenses.

So unfortunately, there is no "Made in Japan" for D90.

I had Nikon D70, D80, both bought in Japan, but Made in Thailand. I had no problems at all with them. Now I`m about to buy D90 and I don`t care where is made. I live in japan and there are many electronics not made here, instead they are made in Thailand, Korea, China.

If you find Made in Japan D80, D90 please let me know. Buy Canon then, if you find one Made in Japan. Hahaha. People are strange.

I agree with JPLAND, I live in Thailand not judge that product produced in Thailand not good at all. Many parts of some electronics in US used China made inside. Good luck.
