Low light Action Shots

My husband is a high school wrestling coach and I find myself taking lots of action shots in low light conditions. I'm currently using a Canon S3IS, I'm just tired of getting blurry shots. So I was looking to upgrade to a SLR and my last 35MM SLR was a Nikon so I was leaning toward the D90. Any suggestions?

Good choice. But remember that in low light, a camera on auto is going to choose to either 1) boost the ISO, 2) widen the aperture or 3) slow the shutter speed. Then there's the notion of expecting instant shots by pressing the button. This is true for an SLR, but it still has to focus and shoot. And you still have to deal with longer shutter speeds in limited light. Prefocusing and panning with the action help, as does available light and sports settings. But you'd be well served to do what the pros do and use a monopod to keep the camera stable to guard against camera shake which is the main culprit of blurry images in low light.

Hi, I picked up a Nikon D90(body) only from the Amazon.com
Now i'm looking for an ideal lens. Since i do a combo of sports photography, outdoor and indoor, i have been advised to select a Nikon70-200mm f/2.8 VR.
What would be your opinion on this lens?

Any input from you is highly appreciated.

Excellent. Obviously, the faster the lens the better. But that Nikkor is one of the best.

I bought the D90 and love it however most of my pictures come out blurred for sports action shots. What setting can I put it on to capture clearer, non-blurred pictures. I've tried the sports setting but it seems to still blur and I am missing a lot of great pictures. HELP...

Thanks...

My recommendation is to read up on sports photography. There are plenty of tips that can help you to get the most out of your pictures.

1st you must stop shooting in auto modes or pre selected modes where the camera picks your settings.. 2nd thing you must do is set your D90 to manual mode. 3rd you must change your shooting mode from single shot to continuous(H) mode. 4th choose a fast shutter. The D90 shutter can go as fast as 1/4000. Note that the higher the shutter the less light you have 4 your shot. I shot a softball game yesterday and i kept my shutter on 1/2000 and the only blur that i had was on the softball laces. Any more questions or you want to see pics email me at truphotography@cox.net

I have just bought a Canon D-90 and really have no experience with these type of cameras. All of my shots are of my children playing baseball..either during the day or at night. I have messed around so much with Manual Mode and Shutter speed mode that now all my pictures are coming out black....I have NO clue what I have done and where to fix the problem. Can someone PLEASE help me?? My son has a game tomorrow night and I would like to take some shots of him!

Hi Sam, I am buying a Nikon D90 and I'm thinking of getting the 18-200mm lens. Check out Ken Rockwell's review at kenrockwell.com.
