How do I solve the error message, "lens error!" on my Coolpix L20, when turned on?

My three years old might have gotten a hold of it and dropped it. But when I turned it on (after a few weeks of usage), it gave the "lens error" message. Tried the other advices on pointing it to the ceiling, with power off and pressed on the shutter released, did not work. Do not want to send to the Nikon service, would prefer your help first. Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! TCA

If you child dropped it, then chances are the lens has been jarred out of alignment. The only safe thing you can do is cycle the camera on/off and hope that the lens will work it's way back into alignment so it will open. I'd do this about 5 or 6 times. But don't force it. If that doesn't work, you're probably going to have to send it in and hope they don't call it impact damage because that won't be covered under warranty.
