battery does not last if you are not careful

I made the mistake of not closing the sliding cover a couple of times, this ate up the batteries, it is a good thing I have spare double AA's, also the sliding cover sometimes sticks, if your hands a slippery this may be a long term problem. The last complaint I have is the Olympus is a propriatory memory card, I can not use this card on any other cameras (I also own a Nikon, and Panasonic camcorder with 4 meg. sd car)
Other than that the camera is great
