How do I use the screen instead of the viewfinder on the Nikon d40?

I have just bought a Nikon D40 and cannot work out how to use the screen instead of the viewfinder to take my pictures. I cannot find any reference to this in the booklet and Im wondering if it can be done? If so, how?

Michelle,

SLR cameras do not take photos through the screen. Sorry if you thought otherwise.

Actually, some cameras are capable of "Live View," that is, a live LCD preview of what you're shooting. The Olympus E-330, 410, and 510 and the Panasonic Lumix L1 have this feature. Unfortunately, the Nikon D40 cannot.

The best thing about the LiveView feature is that you can easily take photos from angles that would be hard to imagine doing on a the regular optical viewfinder. I've been using the E-410 for just about a month and for low-angle shots (or other awkward angles for that matter), LiveView's got my vote.
