If SLRs don't "take" photos through the screen then what exactly is the live preview functionality of the E-510?

Olympus is pitching this feature as an answer to those conditions that make it difficult to see well through a viewfinder. Using a monopod to shoot shots over your head or in extreme low angles. That kind of thing. Therefore, the LCD would be easier to see and compose photographs when you can't look through the optical viewfinder.

Ahem, with the Olympus and Liveview you can compose the image with the viewfinder and/or with the screen - like one of those cameras with no viewfinder. The Nikon D40 does not have this feature. No pictures on any cameras are 'taken through the screens' - because they are viewfinders.

Olympus added an additional mirror and another CMOS imager just for the Liveview feature. The main CMOS imager is located behind the shutter therefore it does not have the capability to preview the picture before it is taken. This is the reason that typical DSLR's do not have a preview feature like the Liveview.

I'd much rather have that CMOS imager for taking the pictures anyway.

Olympus has the Liveview on some of their DSLR's. As far as I know there are no others out there with similiar technology at least not yet.

Personally, that sounds more like a marketing gimick than being of any true value.

Simple, Rather than squinting through the eye monitor, you can now compose, focus, zoom and display settings on the LCD which is viewable from variable angles. Works for me!

The Liveview is slows down the camera when it comes to taking pictures. So far I love the camera. Outside in daylight using the view finder it takes great pictures at about 2 - 3 frames per second if you hold the shutter button down. At the highest resolution it is about 1 picture per second using a 150x CF card.. There are 300x's out now so it won't be long before I upgrade to it.

I understand that when using live view the auto-focus is turned off. Is this true?
