I try to turn my Olympus FE 340 on and the power light flashes and the lense goes in and out and then it turns off

Its not even am month old and it was perfectly fine last night I just turned it on this morning and it started doing this. I thought maybe the battery was dead and it couldnt even turn on but whenever the battery has been dead before it says, battery empty and doesnt turn on just makes a noise. So whats wrong with it?

Usually, in a case like this, the camera lens is out of alignment. Was it dropped, perhaps? If your camera is still under warranty, the best thing you can do have Canon should fix it.

If your camera is out of warranty, or if Olympus refuses to repair it for free, the one thing you can try is to If you gently, and I do mean GENTLY push against the lens with the PALM of your hand as you turn it on, it may cause it to depress back into the camera. If that doesn't work, and you can't reset it or turn it on/off several times, then you may have to send it in for a repair estimate anyway.

Another option is that it may just have some condensation inside it. You could try putting it in a ziplock with about a cup of uncooked rice. The rice quickly sucks up the surrounding moisture. Make sure the environment is free from excess humidity, drop the camera in a container of rice and let it sit. For a better desiccant, it'd be a good idea to store all those little silica gel packets that come in anything from shoe boxes to moisture-sensitive gadgets.

Mine did the same but after a couple of days I went to it and it started right up. Then it did it again and I found the reply from James. I have never dropped it but do put it in my pocket; on close examination there was the slightest of dents on the lens outer ring (with the detail engraved on it) suggesting that perhaps there had been pressure applied. I tried James's idea to no avail, I then "pinged" it (finger flick) lightly on the outer ring and it booted up next try. I guess the camera is more flimsy than I had thought and my lense release method will only work a few times before the camera takes terminal offense.

How did you make out Rachel?

That's a good point, Hugh. The teeth on these rails are extremely finely milled and get more and more fine as cameras get smaller and smaller and zooms get longer and longer. Alignment issues become almost imminent.

Well, at this point, you're probably looking at talking to tech support about it for repair. Is it still under warranty?

My Olympus FE-340 is doing this $hit too. I only had it for at most a month. Sad thing is that I bought it on vacation because my previous Olympus camera broke too - what a shame.

Well, at this point, you should send it in for repair while your warranty is still in force. I tried searching for a service advisory at Olympus, but there isn't one. Still, I'd send contact Olympus for a warranty repair.

How can I reset my Olympus FE-340 camera? Is there a reset switch/button, I can reach or push with a small pen, or go into the setup of the camera and reset it to default or something?
