Does Panorama work with >1G Olympus XD memory cards?

Bought a new 2G Olympus XD memory card with my new FE-340 camera. I've not been able to do Panorama pictures with the 2G XD. However, when I put a 1G Olympus XD in the camera, it does do Panorama pictures.

Is anyone else having this problem? I've looked on the Olympus wed site, and I don't see a camera firmware update.

Should I return the camera as defective?

Sounds to me like your camera has a 1G ceiling.

Perhaps the real reason is you have overlooked the fact that only Olympus xD card can record Panoramic pictures.

You probably bought xD cards made by other manufacturers.

There should be nothing wrong with the camera.

As I said in the original post. Camera is new. with NEW OLYMPUS 2G memory card. Panaroma is supposed to work when you use "Olympus" memory cards. Has anyone else tried Panorama with a 2G Olympus memory card?

From the Olympus Manual: "Compatible Cards - xD-Picture Card (16MB - 2GB) (Type H/M, Standard)"

Looking through the answers, there was no suggestion that the camera is not new.

However, for Panorama, only cards purchased from Olympus works, although Fiji, Sandisk, Lexar also produce xD cards.

If the card does not work, as stated in the Olympus camera - card compatibility chart , then the card should be returned for a new one.

I think the problem may be more insidious. My 2Gb memory card is an Olympus brand Type M+ 2Gb that I bought with the camera, and according to the chart you found... it is compatible. However, my 1Gb card is an Olympus brand Type M 1Gb and Panorama does work with it. The 2Gb Type M+ Olympus card does work for "everything" except Panorama. So, what I think is going on is the firmware in the camera does NOT recognize Type M+ Olympus memory cards to enable Panorama.

Given, I can't find any Non-Type M+ 2Gb Olympus brand memory cards locally.... Olympus should issue a "firmware" update for the camera to fix this problem. While, Panorama picture capability wasn't my primary reason for purchasing the camera. I was looking forward to doing so when on vacation this summer. I just bought a two pack of Olympus Brand 2Gb cards before I discovered this problem from Office Max on sale for less than $30... and I'd bet at this point neither of them will work for Panorama pictures in the camera.

I'm starting to think that returning the camera/memory as defective is just what it'll take to get Olympus to do something about this.

I won't rule out the possibility of camera/memory as defective as stated in your last sentence.
However, if the 2 gb card does everything except panorama, ........ there is more reason to show it to Olympus.

Perhaps I should not elaborate on my suspicion because I have not seen the card personally, but I am sure after close examination, Olympus can tell you more.

Well its very possible that whatever files the xD card needs are corrupted. Since the camera works in panorama with the 1G, I highly doubt the camera is the issue here. My suggestion is to contact Olympus and request another card citing a defective one. Or, buy a new one.

But don't let this prevent you from shooting pans on your trip. Just take a bunch of pictures overlapping the edges and then stitch them together using Adobe Photoshop Elements Photomerge feature.

GIMP also works for stitching photo's together. But Adobe would certainly be more automated. Which is why I wanted to use the Olympus SW to stitch the images together... its automated, and free... with the camera.

When I get a chance, I'll see what the Memory Card signatures are... and try one of the other Olympus brand 2Gb memory cards I have to see what its signature is. That might give some more clues about what is going on.

I finally got brave, and opened my New twin pack of Olympus XD 2G M+ cards. They both worked for Panorama mode in the camera.

The other new Olympus Brand 2G M+ card, when I put it back in generated an error... and asked me if I wanted to "erase/Format" the card... Instead of doing that. I took it out, and used a pencil eraser to clean the contacts. When I re-inserted the card. Panorama mode worked, and I was able to take Panorama pictures with it.

So, if the card has a problem again... I plan to take it back to the store and exchange it for a different card.

Sounds like there was some "smutz" or dirt, dust, oil that was obscuring the connection. Happens a lot.
