Since all cameras are pretty much easily broken because of the LCD screen, the small moving parts, and the fine glass lenses I would recommend getting a high qulaity camera that is inexpensive. You never know what a 6 year old will do, perhaps do for a swin with the camera or feed it some soup, so the Panasonic Lumix DMC LZ3 is what I would suggest getting. It is a great camera and it can take a bit of a beating, but best of all it is cheap for digital cameras.

good luck

it depends how your six year old child is with his or hers things, digital camera are fragille gear and your child should be told to handle it with care , if he or she is not up to handling delicate equipment like a digital camera with care i should wait until he or she is older.

There are few brands that make good camera's panasonic is one of them but also this olympus is a good camera my advice would be go to a great shopping mall and take you child with you see how he or she reacts if you give the camera to the child , some childern know that it is expensive and handle it with care some childern don't the like to play and touch the camera too hard on fragile places like the lcd
