Why not lithium batteries in the Olympus SP 570 UZ?

The SP 570 UZ manual states that this camera is not to be used with lithium batteries. Can someoneone explain the reason for this? Is it to do with performance, or is there a technical risk to the camera? A Cooke

Well it obviously has to do with power requirements. But just about every source I've read only points to the fact you're not supposed to use them, nor are you supposed to use the CR-V3 battery pack, AA-manganese (zinc-carbon) or oxyride batteries.

According to the manual, it cautions to only use alkaline batteries when it is absolutely necessary. I never really had trouble using Alkaline's in the SP550 or 560UZ. And depending on the kind you use (I wouldn't use anything with an mAh below 2500). But in the end, the use of NiMH batteries is recommended.

Thank you, James, for the time and interest; this is moderately helpful only - there are some adequately powerful lithium Energizer batteries around that will do the job of powering the camera. To be more precise, my question is - will it harm the SP 570 UZ camera if I use them? If not, I'll go ahead!

Best wishes, A Cooke

Olympus is pretty adamant that LiOn batteries not be used. I would think as a result that LiOns will effect performance. Having said that, I have used rechargable's with no trouble. But if you use LiOns and they damage your camera, saying James said it was okay won't get you a warranty repair.

Stick with batteries recommended by the manufacturer. It's your best bet for best performance.

I'll hazard a guess on this one since I do NOT pretend to KNOW the answer. Each of these types of batteries have slightly different voltage performance curves. The camera has circuitry and programming to predict battery charge level based on its voltage. So using the other battery types could easily give a false "battery charge level" reading. While that doesn't sound like too big a deal, it can cause the camera to shut off because it thinks the batteries are almost dead when they are not or vice versa (keep going when it should shut off and thereby possibly damage the camera by locking up in some intermediate position from which it can not recover.
All this is speculation on my part based on experience with other cameras and horror stories mostly read on the internet.

Larry, this is the best explanation so far, and the only one to address the possible technicalities that must be lurking somewhere in the batteries or the camera or bot. sincere thanks. A Cooke.
