Though the Olympus 1030 uses a standard 3.6x optical zoom with face detection, its real hallmark is its ruggedness: you can smash it, drop it, freeze it, and sink it without worrying (though you may not want to do all that at the same time). Divers can take 10.1 megapixel pictures from a maximum depth of 33 feet without the need of any additional protection and the camera can survive a fall from over six feet. For a camera of this size, it's remarkably sturdy.
