Something like 2-3% of P&S digital cameras just die for no obvious reason. It is considered an "acceptable" rate of failure considering the increased price that would result in improving the components to reduce the failure rate to 0.5-1%. So this is the "optimum" point.
Hopefully, your camera is under warranty or within the time to return directly to the store.
You could try resetting the camera (look in the user manual for "reset" or "initialize" procedure. Failing that, remove the batteries for several minutes to attempt to force the camera to reboot its little computer brain.

When the camera is on, try shining a flashlight or LED light into the display screen and see if you can see the text/pictures/etc that normally show up on the screen. If you can, its possible that the backlight for the screen just went out, or got disconnected. It tends to happen to cameras now and then. If this isn't the case, then what most likely happened is the screen became disconnected from the processor, causing it not to display the image. Or I guess the screen could have just died, like Larry said. It's hard to tell between the last two.
