Broke 7 months after warranty expired

Took great pictures the first year 1/2.
I also want to mention that I protected this camera like it was my only child.
However, I picked it up one day and took a picture, then I could not get the cover to slide back across the lens. 2 days later(out of the blue)started shutting again but now every time you open it and the lens comes out it does not focus. Any picture you take is smeared and smudged. It is absolutely useless. I purchased it 11/28/03 for $437.99 total (Sucker). I emailed Olympus and was assured "Olympus cameras are designed for and do provide many years of use" but I would have to pay a flat fee of $143.00 for rapair since it was no longer under warranty + shipping and insurance. Or since I am a valued customer in need of repair, I am now eligible to participate in their "Repair Trade-Up program". This allows you to purchase "at a discount" a brand new(not factory refurbished) camera!! What a deal—-Not!! Look for someone with a better warranty, they expect their product will last at least as long as their warranty. I should have realized that when it only had a year warranty.
