Pam,
This camera won't be that bad because of the 12x optical zoom. If you really want to get close shots, I would recommend splurging on a dSLR camera. You can purchase a [url=http://www.digitaladvisor.com/lenses/35-mm-lenses-telephoto_ratings.html]telephoto lens that will make it look like your photos were taken from the floor/field level. Make sure that you have permission to take the photos in the venue you are at. Many arenas/stadiums don't allow personal cameras of that size. Good luck and happy shooting.
