I need a small digital camera under around $300 or less, that will be good for taking legible images of written documents in an archive. Any advice?

I'm a history grad student and next year I'll be working in French archives, some of which permit scholars to take digital images of the documents. I'm in the market for a new digital camera and need one that is easily portable, inexpensive, and most importantly will take good close up images of documents that will be clear enough from me to read later on. I'd also be interested in any recommendations for a small portable tripod. Thanks, Lauren

hello lauren
what you need is a camera with good spot metering.
this means the ability of the auto focus to center quickly on one object.
this is a feature of the lumix range of cameras from panasonic
i have a lz3 and often use it for this purpose.

Thanks so much Steve, your archival images look great. Other reviewers of the lz3 complain about it breaking early and easily. Did you have any problems like that?
