Need a good, general purpose (indoor anad outdoor, near and far) camera PLUS decent video mode with sound... is the FX01 my best option?

We're also going to Europe in a few weeks - daughter's chorus is singing in cathedrals there. Obviously, I need a good, easy to use camera (for a low tech Mom) to photography the scenery and kids, etc PLUS we want a good quality video to record some of their performances. I read the link Matt was referred to (previous question). It says you can not zoom in video mode on the FX01. Does that mean if we are in a balcony they will look like little specks on the stage? Or would it allow me to zoom in to get a tighter shot of the kids on stage and then kick on the record to get the group singing (even if I couldn't zoom in on my kid specifically)?

Hope that makes sense...
If you know of another camera that might better serve my needs, I'd certainly appreciate the name and I'll research it, too.
THANKS!

If zooming while videotaping is your concern, can I recommend you think the opposite way? how about a video camcorder which can shoot digital stills? You can get much better zoom and a 3ccd camcorder will give you better image resolution.

A good option, if you can still find it, is the Panasonic GS500. 3CCD camera with both firewire and USB 2.0 for transfer, image stabilization, and recording on miniDV. The image resolution is 3x1.5 MP, and the still camera would be the same. And you can zoom in the process and capture straight to an SD card.

Word on the street though, is that the GS500 has been discontinued to make ready for a new model. You can still find it available as vendors sell out their existing stock to make ready. And support will still be available for it.

It's followup is the GS320, it's area is 3x800K. Still pretty good, but the still resolution is only 2MP. But an option if video is the priority over still shots.

My thinking though is that with what may be a once in a lifetime trip, why not just bite the bullet and get both a still camera and a video camera.

If not, I still like the Olympus SP-550UZ. I'm testing it and have so far been quite pleased with the results. 7.1 MP, 18x zoom, image stabilization and some great scene based program features including a 15fps burst mode, editing features such as cropping, sepia and black/white alterations, nite modes, super macro mode for REALLY close up shots, panoramic guides for shooting multiple shots to stitch into a panarama, even a mode for shooting documents.

It's video resolution is AVI Movie with Sound: 640x480/30fps and it only limited by the size of your xD card.

The downside, like the FX01, you can't zoom while shooting in video. What is seriously up with that limitation?

I have found the menu structure wanting and difficult to use on the fly, but other than that, it's a top notch camera.

Hello Les, I agree that you will get better videos with a camcorder, and most of the time a digital camera ais meant for photos and the video side isn't that great and the same works with camcorder, the still shots most of the time aren't that great. There are a few cameras that do bridge that gap already. The Pentax MX4 is a discontinued model now, but you may be able to find it for sale somewhere still. It can take some great photos, even though it has only 4 MP. But this is enough for 8X10 prints that look great and I have won contests with the shots from this digicam. The Video side of it is also quite good. The quality of the visual side is a little batter than a lot of the other digital still cameras, and the sound is fantastic. Most of the time when you look at the different camera statistic they only show the video quality and don't mention the audio side of it, like what it what is the sound quality. This camera has 10X optical zoom that works well in pretty well all situations, the only down fall it that when you are recording sometimes the mic. picks up the sound of the motor zooming the lens. I would still recommend this camera and for the most part I don't think you will be regretting. I hope this info will come in handy and will have answered your question, at Least beyond what James Deruvo has already explained to you. Good luck with the searching - Josh
