Is the flash just as bad as in earlier Lumix versions?

I have an earlier version of the Lumix, and Im not at all happy with the flash. Has it been improved, or will I be just as disappointed with this one?

I think you need to understand that point and shoot flashes are designed around small groups and portait shots. As such, any point and shoot flash will dissipate after about 6-10 feet. If you need something more powerful, than a point and shoot that has an external hot shoe (like the Canon G9/G10) will enable you to use a zoomable flash for better coverage.

But most dissatisfied users are that fashion due to unrealistic expectations in the camera itself.
