You will still be able to shoot Macro with a normal lens, but the quality won't be even close to as good as with the Macro lens. The macro lens is specially designed with a different shaped lens so that it can focus on objects that are much closer to the lens as opposed to a normal lens which is designed for objects further away.

That is a good answer, but I also meant can I use non Panasonic lenses. If so which are best? Is it good to get several diopters? Also do I need to go to conversion in the menu with all these add on lenses?

The Panasonic lenses are probably going to be the safest as far as quality and functionality with the camera, but there are several good 3rd party ones, such as Opteka, some of which can even be better quality. Usually you don't have to go to the conversion menu, but I haven't used the FZ50, so I couldn't tell you for sure, it should just be able to attach on and function. I would try and avoid external lenses as much as possible, because though they can improve quality, they also add stops to your f value and sometimes distort pictures.

What do you mean by external lenses? I thought all the macro lenses for the FZ50 were external since this is a fixed lens zoom rather than a DSLR.
