Lumix LX2 Memory card need to reformat it but camear stuck

I have had the Lumix LX2 for just over a monthand after downloading all the photos to my laptop and deleted them. I now have an error message saying 'Memory card error please check the card'. I tried what the manual said to reformat the card but I press the buttons and cannot access the menu for formating. Is it a fault in the camera ? could I reformat the card in some other way ? PLease advise.
I live in the UK. Isit true that these cameras have been recalled ?

I looked on Panasonics site at there is no issued recall, meaning that it is probably just a rumor going around. Just a quick question, when you deleted your pictures, did you delete them via deleting files from the laptop, or did you delete them using the review in the camera? If you used the laptop, you may have deleted a necessary formatting file on the card, which also may be why you can't access it. If this is not a problem, then several cameras have this error, which occurs randomly, and usually have to have either the firmware upgraded (check the Panasonic site), or send it in for repair if its still under warranty. Since its only a month old it should definitely still be under warranty. Hope this helps.

I'd try resetting your camera. This is a fairly easy procedure which involves either going into your setup menu and choosing "reset" (or intialize), holding down the menu key for 5 seconds, or, removing the batteries for a few minutes. It may be that the firmware loading got corrupted and the camera just needs to be "rebooted," which is something that turning it on/off won't accomplish. But after which, you should have the camera reset to factory default settings.

Even better, invest in a $10 USB memory card reader and simply take your card out and plug it in. The PC will read it as a drive and it's a simple drag and drop to get your pictures onto the PC for editing and printing. Much better than trying to trouble shoot driver issues.

But in the end, cards do get corrupted from time to time. Especially if you're using your camera to delete the files. If your card goes bad, you can use a utility like "F-Recovery" to get back your pictures and recover your card.

i did finally get through to the Panasonic helpline and they advised to try a different SD card as the one I was using may be corrupted. I did that and it solved the problem but I am still unsure as to what is the best way to delete the pictures once downloaded without de running the risk of erasing the formatting.

I've seen people use both the formatting method each time and also the deleting each picture method. Recent studies show, not conclusively, but that it is possible by constantly reformatting the card it puts it under more stress and is more likely to get corrupted. Whether thats true or whether thats rumor has not been proved. I would probably just delete all of the photos from the computer just to be safe.

I transfer the pics via USB memory card reader and then just delete the card. So far, no problems and it's been about 6 years.

I can confirm this is not a rumour going around. I have the same problem with one of my SD cards. It is a 2GB one from integral. My card reader and the camera can not access the card. My computer does not access it.

I have a Lumix DMC FZ7 and have been using it for about 2 years. In the last several months I was getting progressively more frequent memory card errors which appeared to resolve themselves by removing and reseating the card. Eventually, I could not do that and assumed the card was corrupt. I now have a new card and still the same problems.
