Try going into the camera's Setup menu and choosing Format card. This WILL erase your photos, but I'm assuming the card is empty if you haven't been able to take any anyways. The Format should help the card and camera 'recognize' each other, and might solve the problem. If that doesn't work, check to make sure the card you have is compatible with the camera and that it's inserted properly.

I had the same problem with my Panasonic brand 1 gig SD card. After speaking to tech at Panasonic we decided it was a problem with the card.
Formating the card only erases what is on the card. We also tried resetting camera preferances via set up menu and this did not help.
I did buy another SD card and it works perfectly.
I am sending the card back to them for replacement.
Check to see if camera writes to internal memory, this is a good indicator as to source of problem.

I had this very same problem just now, and googled for results, coming up with this.

I tried going through setup to format camera and i did; seeing as my card didn't have any pictures i was surprised at how long it took to format, but now; it's works perfectly again!
