great camera but too big, and a little slow in between shots. ther eis nothign wrong with it, though and it takes great pics and is easy to use. the most compelling aspect is the 6X optical zoom- so if that is improtant, then thisis a greta camera.

I think you can better, frankly. Canon powershot line comes to mind. But why don't you get him into serious SLR photography instead? That way he can learn photo composition, and develop a good artistic eye. You can pick up a good XT fairly cheap these days.

SLR stands for "Single lens reflex." It's a regular manual camera. Digital wise, the XT is a good beginner camera which has gotten pretty cheap since the XS and XSi have come out (both great cameras as well). You can use any EF level Canon mount lens with and it would be a great tool with which to learn the hobby of digital photography.

If not, you may want to check out the SX100IS by Canon. It has some manual features and a nice zoom.
