It sounds to me like a lens problem, more specifically something is wrong with the zooming mechanism in the camera. Usually if a camera cannot function with the zoom because there is something that is stopping the mechanics from working correctly, the lens will retract or it will tell you to reset the camera, or clean the camera, to avoid damaging any of the parts. Try blowing compressed air into the lens, and if that doesn't work try taking in to a repair shop to see if they can take it apart and clean the inside, again most likely with compressed air.
