First thing I would do is reset the camera. This is a fairly easy procedure which involves either going into your setup menu and choosing "reset" (or intialize), holding down the menu key for 5 seconds, or, removing the batteries for a few minutes. It may be that the firmware loading got corrupted and the camera just needs to be "rebooted," which is something that turning it on/off won't accomplish. But after which, you should have the camera reset to factory default settings.

Another tip is to go to the Pentax website and look for firmware updates. Download and install them.

Also, make sure your batteries are fresh. Depleted batteries can cause the camera to experience a lack of functionality.

I am unable to load any firmware updates.

I have replaced with new batteries and followed the instructions to return to factory default settings.
Holding down the menu key does not is any respond.

Absolute no joy, the centre OK button is active at times but the 4 arrow buttons are not.

Any other ideas, please?

Can you briefly outline what's keeping you from downloading the updates? They're only 641k. Absent that, was it dropped? With it's age, you'd probably going to have to have it sent in for a repair estimate .
