The "B" setting on cameras allows the photographer to choose how long to keep the shutter open. So on some cameras, you have to hold the shutter button down (this is probably more prevalent on older mechanical cameras) and then let up when you want to close the shutter. On digital cameras, it may be that you have to press the button a second time, to signal that you are finished.
