How do you setup a zoom lens on it?

What settings need to be changed to use a zoom lens? I'd like to use the camera in manual mode just like I used my 35mm Pentax.

Hello Kerry , If you have any older pentax K-mount lenses from your old 35mm pentax they will attach to this camera the same way the lens attach's now . the only thing you need to do is put the aperture adjusting ring to (A) auto. Then with your k100d camera in manual mode , you set your shutter and f stops with the camera as you do now with your 18-55mm digital lens. Also note you multiply lenses about 1.5 on digital cameras. Example 18-55mm on film =28-80 digital. If you have both cameras look through the same lens on each camera and notice how much difference there is.

Ja, note he said he likes to use it in full manual. Going auto for the FStop is kinda cheating in that regard, isn't it? As for setup, I'm not sure what you're mean, Kerry. You screw it on and it's ready to rock in manual. You just need to follow the light meter.

Note , On the pentax camera I should have said you can use the lenses in two ways. one is to put the lens into A mode ( A meaning you will control its function alternately) and set the aperture f- stop settings with the camera manual settings. Or two use your aperture ring to set the stops again manually to what you prefer. The pictures will both be exactly the same to look at. On the computer under properties the aperture setting will be missing when you set it with the ring and not internally, the camera program isn't able to read the lens or chosen f-stop when you set the ring other than A. The A on the lens only means you are going to control it by another order.

Oops I should have also said you can use this set up in full automatic mode let the camera do all the thinking . let it pick the shutter speed and aperture setting as well as ISO and auto focus .I know it will do plenty more than most people will ever want.

Ok maybe you could help me out.... I just got an SMC Pentax M 1:2.8-4 40-80mm lens off ebay. I do not understand how to set the f stop on here. All my photos are coming to washed out and bright if i use the flash... however if i dont use a flash they are too dark and blurry. I know many people have been able to do this i own the Pentax K100D as well. But im not sure how to adjust the f stop i guess that would solve the problem. I did however change the setting under the custom settings menu To prohibit pictures when the aperture ring position is other than A. So i think thats what you all mean when you say set to a... It will let me take pictures in both Apeture priority mode (Av) and Manual (m) modes... however the shots are coming way to bright and washed out if i use the flash. And this is just the onboard flash nothing external. I could really use some help. please email me

Thanks alot,

Dave

First thing I would do is reset the camera. This is a fairly easy procedure which involves either going into your setup menu and choosing "reset," see page 179/180 of your manual for the exact procedure. It may be that the firmware loading got corrupted and the camera just needs to be "rebooted," which is something that turning it on/off won't accomplish. But after which, you should have the camera reset to factory default settings.

Another tip is to go to the Pentax website and look for firmware updates. Download and install them.

All Pentax M series lenses are K-mount, not KA, the apertures have no auto setting.

As the camera cannot read the aperture the on-board flash won't work in auto. You will just have to raise lens aperture until the flash gives the correct exposure.

In daylight you put the camera in manual (not Av), set your aperture on the lens, and then press the camera's AE-L button this will select the correct shutter speed. You're ready to go.
