I heard that older lenses will work on new Pentax DSLR's. How old are we talking? Can you use a lens without auto-focus on a modern camera?

I am interested in the Pentax 100D or 110D but can't afford a new telephoto lens. I have a very old 200mm Ranger MC lens which i use for my 1970s Pentax MV and was wondering if i could use that. I think i'm being a bit wishful. If i don't go for the Pentax i'll be going for the new Fuji S9600 or the Panasonic FZ50. I can't choose between them though! Thanks for any help

Hi Freddie,

Pentax claims that all K-mount lenses will work with the K100D. Yes, ALL. Non-AF K-mount lenses have to be used in manual mode, obviously, but that's not a problem for most people.

I don't know much about older lenses, so I don't know if the Ranger lens you mention here is K-mount, but I'm guessing not. Many screw-mount (M42) lenses can also be used with the Pentax dSLRs with an adapter. They can also be used with just about any other brand of dSLR, as there are adapters made for most of them.

Sorry, this response is kind of jumbled. Maybe someone who knows more about your particular lens will come along. :)

Between the FZ50 and the S9600 I'd definitely go for the FZ50. It's an extremely solid camera and very well-rated by users and pros alike.

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply Ben. Think it'll be the FZ50 if i don't go for the Pentax. I noticed a 100D sitting in my local camera shop window earlier so i'll take the lens and see if somebody will let me have a look. Thanks again

The Ranger lens must be a K-mount as the Pentax MV is a K-mount? Should i go for the Pentax over FZ50 if the 200mm lens fits? I've also got a 2x lens which i use for my Pentax so that would come in handy to!

Freddie,

The K100D is no doubt a better camera than the FZ50, but it's also quite a bit pricier and is going to probably convince you to spend even more money on lenses for it down the line. Bottom line: if I had the money to spend on it, I'd certainly choose it over the FZ50.

One thing you might want to do is take your lens into a camera store that has a K100D on display and see if it will mount. Most stores will allow you to do this under the supervision of a trained employee. It's the surest way to know if it works. :)

i bought the new k10d, this is a great gadget, if you have old lenses, than i would go for the k100d (has a stabilizer). the price of the k100 should drop since there is a k10d on the market. you'll be surprised what you can get out of old lenses.
Be aware that the 200mm will be 350mm equivalent (due to smaller chip) + there is a small shift with the ring as well

btw the basic 18-55 lens is one of the top in the kit lenses

My old Pentax-M SMC 50mm 1:2 lens works on the new Pentax K100D digital body. Of course, one has to focus manually and set the TV and AP manually.
