Telephoto lens for K100D

I recently bought this camera.... this website helped me a lot in my dicission - thanks! The camera is excellent and would highly recommend it. I had an older K mount ranger lens which i hoped would fit but when we tried it on the k100d in the shop we got it jammed for 10 mins.. but eventually got them seperated. I have been looking at telephoto lenses but can't decide what to get... Can anybody recommend one that DEFINATLY fits and works with AF? The DA 200mm is the obvious one but is quite expensive and was wondering if there is an alternative that is better/cheaper? I was looking at this Sigma lens http://www.tecno.co.uk/Store/s45491/0/Lenses/Sigma/70-300mm-f-and-4-56-DG-Macro-(Pentax-AF)/details.aspx would this work and is it a good lens? Or maybe this http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=137115&partner=froogle Any help would be AWESOME!!! Thanks!!

Freddie,

I've heard a lot of different photographers grumble about the quality in Sigma lenses. If your budget is hurting, they can be an acceptable substitute, but the name brand lenses fit better. A good versatile Pentax lens would be the Pentax 28-105mm f/4-5.6 lens. The wide zoom range and decent aperture make it a good choice. The 75-300mm lens you suggest isn't bad, but you will find it lacking for wide angle shots. You'll want something with a shorter length for those shots. I hope this helps. Good luck and happy shooting.

Andrew

The wide angle lens you have suggested doesn't seem to be available anywhere in the UK which unfortunatly is where I live! The lens looks great and would be nice to have. I've not really heard of a wide zoom... how will the picture look differently to a picture taken from the same lengh as a normal telephoto lens? I am still thinking of getting the 300mm pentax lens anyway, because i've found it for a bargain £89.99..... but it only comes in silver.... will it look ridiculous on the the black K100D???? Thanks for your help Andrew

Just found this http://www.microglobe.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php/pName/tamron-28300mm-f3563-xr-di-af-lens-for-pentax-digital-camera

Are Tamron better than Sigma? This looks like a good versatile lens. However, its twice the price of the Pentax 300mm! I'm so confused.... don't know what to buy!!

Freddie,

I have actually looked at purchasing a Tamron lens for my dSLR as well. They rate very highly and seem to have some very technical advances. I will probably be purchasing mine in March or April, so I would go for it if you think its the lens for you. As for the silver on black, I don't think it would look that bad. I am personally more function than fashion though. Good luck.

Andrew

Cheers Andrew. I'm going to go for the Tamron then... I read a review on the lens and that was good. I'll let you know how I get on with it. Thanks for your help
