problems with USB download

Has anyone ever reported a problem with USB downloads ? My Optio 33L was working fine until yesterday when I plugged it into the USB (something done many times before) when it shutdown and is now completely dead. Also, while the computer normally see's it is connected to the camera and starts the download process, it didn't recongnise it this time. Took the SD card to try it on a friends card reader and the photo's were fine.

Tried changing battery but nothing. Its almost as if the USB has fried the camera's control circuits or as disabled the on/off switch
