I had to change the resolution on my computer to 1024x768 from 800x600 in order to view the video clearly. Is that the norm?

Yes, 1024 x 768 gives you more pixels on the monitor and as such, makes your video clarity improve by about 25% or so.

Any info much appreciated. I am learning the camera and find it quite different from my old 3.1 Pentax.

Thank you for taking the patience to respond.

When I download my photos from the A640 to the computer, I have two files for each picture/movie. One file is around 4,000KB, while the other is 20. Is that also the norm? This was not the case with the old Pentax .

Ignore the 20. Not sure what that is other than a txt file perhaps. The 4MB file is your picture.
