The Canon A710IS is a good option, as is the Kodak C743. Compact. 7.1 Mega Pixels. The A710 has a better optical zoom (6x). Both have the benefit of a viewfinder, which is a vanishing breed, and both use SD cards and shoot in JPG.
You could also take a look at the Pentax T20. Small and compact with equal MP rates. But it's a tad more expensive than it's Canon competitor.
I'd go with the A710IS. It has a Kids & Pets special preset. And you also have a nice video feature for shooting on the spot video moments.
That's the way I'd go.
