I just purchased a Sony A100 & want to take night action shots of my son playing soccer. Can you help me with the correct setting I should use?

The lighting will be from a football field, so not very bright. Also, my daughter will be in a fashion show and the only lights will be on the runway, the rest of the room will be dark. I will not be allowed to use a flash.

You'll have to up the ISO then but understand that above 800, you'll start to see more noise in your picture. You should also open your aperture wide open. These are manual settings, and if you're not comfortable with that just yet, then you can look to your camera's presets for an available light or night setting. I'd also recommend using a tripod to minimize camera shake. That would help.

Thank you James...I think I am comfortable using the manual settings, just wasn't sure what numbers I should use. I have gone to a couple of his practices with about the same amount of lighting and did use my tripod, but still got that "ghosty" look in my picture. I know that these are probably the most difficult photos to capture, but I'll be happy if I come home with a few good ones. During the day.....no problem, I get GREAT action shots!

Well that's the beauty of digital. You can literally shoot hundreds and only keep a few. Try bracketing. Shoot at +1 stop, regular, and -1 stop and choose the best. See page 62 of the manual. There is a continuous bracketing feature which allows you to automatically shoot a burst of shots which will adjust the fstop on the fly.

Can I use the "burst" on manuel, I know it's automatic when I set it on sport. I'm really excited about trying different settings, but I also want to "capture" my son. The season just starts next Tuesday, so I'm hoping by the end...I'll have some good ones for me and the year book! THANK YOU! for taking the time to help me!

I don't see why not. You won't be able to change on the fly like the auto bracket feature does, but sure, you should be able to burst. Experiment with it. I'm sure by season's end you'll have quite the highlight reel.

I sure hope so. I have really enjoyed my camera and have gotten some BEAUTIFUL pictures of a sunset on St. Pete Beach!!!! I only took 275 pictures, and only about 8 of them aren't really good. That's because it was getting very dark and my shutter stayed open longer and I must have moved, so there is a slight blur. Thank you so much for your help and imput!
