Would my MAXXUM 4000AF flash be able to fully synchronise with the a100?

I have an adapter for the hot shoe, so that the flash can fit onto the XI range Minolta cameras. The sony also requires this adapter between the MAXXUM flash and the body.

Well at least on full manual it would. HOwever, since Sony effectively took over Minolta's camera business, I'd say the chances are pretty good for some auto functions. I'd take your flash to the store to test it to be certain though.

I have tested the flash on my MINOLTA 7000 DYNAX in order to confirm proper and complete operation without exception. It fully synchronises with the MINOLTA camera. Seeing that SONY was developed to accommodate MINOLTA accessories, I would expect it to work with the a100 too. I would like a response from someone who has physically tried the compatability of this flash with the a100. If the flash does not synchronise with the a100 and automatic functions are not possible, then I would say that Sony has been somewhat devious in suggesting compatability with Minolta accessories. Thanks for the effort.

No. First of all it won't even mount without an adapter. Minolta changed the flash mount shoe after the 3000/5000/7000 model series, and all subsequent Maxxum and then Sony Alpha cameras use a different shoe mount. And then with an adapter it will only fire full blast. While you could put the camera into manual mode and guestimate the shutter speed, it is just not worth it.
