comparison of Canon XTI and Sony Alpha

I am wanting to upgrade to my first SLR. I am looking at the XTi and Alpha. Appear fairly comparable except for the standard lens. What points make one camera better than another? Should I sacrafice the lens ability of the Sony for the tradition of the Canon?

my experience with sony higher end cameras has been horrible.
I have not tested out the alpha yet, but I managed to palm off my r1 to buy a canon 400d. I am much happier now ,though I will have to live with the guilt of selling someone a lemon. It was everything a camera should not be. And the alpha..... well I dont want to touch another sony for a long long time.
