I am looking for that can take pictures of minute insects in the fields. Will A 300 serve the purpose?

All dSLRs will be able to do the job, and A300 is no exception.
The difference actually lies in the quality of the Macro lens, and you definitely will need one if you intend to go into it.

There is an article about insect photography at this location that might be of interest to you. and here is an article on macro lens that will give you some useful ideas on the same subject.
