Which one: Sony A350 or Nikon D5000?

Hi there (:
I'm a 1st year university student studying digital media (i.e. novice) and I am tossing up between getting a Sony A350 ($1148) and Nikon D5000 ($1500).
I have tried weighing up some pros and cons (sorry if i'm wrong for any of the following):

Sony A350:
+ cheaper
+ more megapixels (though i've heard this isn't necessarily better?)
- Sony has less experience in DSLR cameras

Nikon D5000:
+ video recording (though i don't really see myself using it too much)
+ nikon has a better reputation in DSLRs?
- more expensive

Please help! I have no clue and I'm terrible at making decisions.
Cheers!
x

It's more expensive, but it's worth every penney. The simple truth is that with Nikon you get legacy lens support. That means you can use the last 50 years of superior glass - albeit mostly in manual. Nikon is really at the top of the game when it comes to DSLRs. Though it may appear that Sony doesn't have much experience in DSLRs, the fact is, they took over Minolta's business and actually improved their product lines. The Alpha series is an excellent line, but it can't really compare to Nikon and it's far superior glass.

Nothing like talking out your ass...far superior glass how..show some specs...do some comparison shots..post them...don't just make judgemental statements...nothing is less helpful...Sony has a pro series of lenses as well as nikon...G and Zeiss...I use both and both give excellent results... it all depends on how much you want to spend on your glass...
