It probably will, but not on automatic. You'll have manual features only.

If the lens supports AF in Minolta then Autofocus will work in the Sony Alpha's, Sony did that on purpose so that the Alpha owners could in fact use any of the lenses made to fit the Minolta A mounts on their cameras. As a Alpha owner myself, I have put his into practice, and yes it works fine. However you should only consider the DG but my favourite the APO version of this lens. The DL is way too soft. Sigma does not support Multi metering mode, Like the Sony/Minolta branded lenses. Where you will see they have 8 contacts but this Sigma has only 5. Does anyone really use flash assisted metering in day to day photography? No! So no big deal.

Their are a couple versions of the 28-300 but they are fairly new designs. Some older Sigma auto focus lens will not be detected by the camera, and usually then that's only the early lens of that particular design (serial numbers that start with 1 are usually at the highest risk). Sigma will rechip many of these lenses for free to make them work if they have chips available.

You really shouldn't have given James points for being wrong :).

I agree with christian, you should not have awarded points. i hope you did not spend money when the answer is "probably".

i had a sigma 28-300 and the auto focus worked fine. the camera had to be set to TTL to use the flash. (the lens had 5 contacts.)

however, the copy i had never really produced a sharp focus, so i got rid of it and replaced it with a used Minolta 70-210 F4. the pictures are so much better than the sigma. i hope your copy is better than that. ;)
