Hi Mary,
This could be one of two things, and I'm betting it's the second one, but I'll give you the easier one first, just in case.
1. Reset your camera. Should be instructions on how to do this in the manual, it's probably under the Setup menu and called Factory Reset/ Restore Default, something along those lines.
2. Didn't work? OK. =) I think what you have is a dead/ bad image sensor. The good news is (as you can see from the comments up at top of this page, next to the stars), as people are saying, Sony is repairing this. Awhile back they had a recall on bad image sensors in certain cameras, and yours is one of them. Contact Sony at 1-866-703-7669; you should be able to get this repaired at no cost.
