Hi Lewis,
Though your camera is undoubtedly out of warranty, there is a recall on F717s thanks to a defective imaging sensor. If this is the problem you have, then you can probably get it repaired for free by contacting Sony's tech support division. If you can see menus and startup images but not the live preview when in shooting mode, then this is probably the case. Otherwise, it's probably the LCD itself and that will be a very costly repair (probably around $200). If that's so, you'll probably just want to put that cash toward a newer, better camera.
