Auto-focus probelm and battery

When I charge my Sony 717 batterypack the 'fully charged' indicator light on the camera seems to come on fairly quickly, before I'd expect it to have really recharged the battery. I then get power loss after a relatively short period of use of the camera. I have at the same time noticed that even immediately after a full charge-up I can't get auto-focus to work properly - so I've lost the ability to point and shoot at close quarters except by manual focus. This isn't the end of the world bit I'd really like to restore correct auto focus function. My camera knowledge is fairly limited, but interested. I'd be grateful for any follow-ups.

Lithium Ion batteries lose capacity over time and as such, it won't get a full charge before appearing fully charged. And since this camera is 6 years old, it's probably due for a new battery.
