Great hardware awful software

( - 12/14/04) The DSC-M1 is a great piece of hardware engineering. It is amazing what the Sony engineers packed into such a small package. The downside is that the software is an embarrassment. The driver does not work and the included software is barely functional. The Picture Package application cannot even display the MP4 files generated by the camera. There may also be some glitches in the MP4 encoding. QuickTime warns me of errors, but eventually plays the video. Picture quality appears excellent both in still picture mode and in videos. The proprietary MemoryStick DUO Pro memory looks like an SD card, quacks like an SD card, but costs twice as much. Ergonomics could use some improvement, but it is reasonable to sacrifice some for style.
