How do the flash is broken?

The flash no longer comes on when I take pictures. I'm not sure if why because it hasn't been dropped. Is it broken? What can I do to get it fixed? Should I even get it done?

Did you double check all your settings and make sure you're not in a mode where the flash doesn't operate? If so, I would at least call Sony and see how much repairs are running before throwing in the towel on it... it may be much cheaper to fix than purchasing another camera.

Thanks Brenda P. I've already checked the settings. It is broken because I can hear the pieces when I shake it.

If anyone wants to sell their DSC M1 cheap for spares please let me know. The memory card reader has broken on mine. When I took it apart it is a simple replacement module but Sony want £175 just to look at it.

If you have any mechanical aptitude at all, the flash replacement is easy. First, call Sony at 1-800-488-7669 to order the part - Flash Unit is FL80000, Part # 147904011 for your DSC - M1 (Cost is $69.79, $81.71 with shipping).

Once you receive the part in the mail ( about a week ), use a precision philips head screwdriver (you can purchase an entire set for $5 just about anywhere and you'll continue to use for eyeglass repairs, etc) to remove the 6 philips head screws from the base unit only ( the thick section of the camera) . Draw a diagram of the camera and line-up the screws after removal to make sure you know how put them back correctly. Lift off the thin section of the camera carefully to expose the inside of the camera. You will quickly see the flash unit in the upper part - simply lift up the center top section and flip it back. The flash unit will then be completely exposed with the attached battery inside a plastic housing. Carefully unclip it and slide out the flash unit making sure you disengage the small chip the slides into a white female slot.
Now that you have completely removed the flash unit from the camera all you have to do is remove the old unit from the plastic housing and put in the new one the same way. Then reinsert the flash unit by snapping it back in place and sliding the small chip back into the white slot with a pair of tweezers. THat's it - put the camera back together making sure the screws are put back in
the same way.

Thank you George.. I love this camera! I'm a videographer and have taken the M1 all over the world (as a personal pocket camera) and have shot some pretty amazing stuff.. from safari's in Africa to Hawaii and Alaska!! And when my flash broke I was all ready to 'break' down and spend hundreds for another multi-functional camera. Anyway, thanks for the instructions on how to replace the flash- extremely helpful! To note, when reinserting the housing, make sure the flash is aligned with the housing opening for correct fit. Thanks again!
