Camera steady but occasional problem with swirly picture, as if extreme movement. Part of picture is fine..

At times my camera takes very swirly pictures, sometimes just part of the picture, like extreme movement where there is none. Not every picture in a series, and no crazy shaking or movement of the camera. Other times pictures crystal clear. Have had the camera since 8-04 and this problem pops up from time to time, more lately and I am afraid of its reliability. Weather conditions don't seem a factor, happens different times of the year, inside and outside. Wish I could send an example. Most of my pictures taken in automatic mode. Any help appreciated!

It could be that you're shooting in low light situations and not realize it. If the camera is underexposing, it can causee what you are referring to. And camera shake happens even if it isn't "crazy."

Regardless, I recommend getting in the habit of using your flash in most situations as it will make your subject "pop," even in bright light.

You may be able to download a firmware update from Sony here which solves that issue.

You also may want to try resetting the camera. Your manual should be able to show you how to do that.

Sounds like you might be experiencing the CCD issue for which these cameras have been recalled - mine is going back to Sony - issue seems to show as a "smeared" picture on the view finder LCD that seems to go sort of "brown and white" rather than colour
